The meeting focused on regional security and defense issues, President Nausėda noted that Lithuania and Poland shared common security challenges, welcomed growing number of US troops in Poland and Lithuania, and discussed the agenda of the December NATO Summit in London.
The Presidents focused on energy security issues, the synchronization of power grids with continental Europe, and implementation of gas and electricity infrastructure projects. The position on non-purchase of electricity from non-compliant nuclear power plants was also discussed. The Lithuanian President thanked the Polish President for Poland’s consistent position on the Ostrovets NPP, noting that non-compliance of the Ostravets NPP remains a threat to the entire EU region.
The meeting also focused on the implementation of the Rail Baltica project. The Presidents agreed that this project will significantly contribute to the region's economic growth and integration of the countries. It was agreed to seek appropriate funding for the project in the next EU financial perspective.
The two leaders also exchanged opinions on the situation in the Eastern Neighborhood and relations with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The Presidents agreed that the sanctions against Russia must continue until Russia eliminates the causes for their introduction. Both Presidents support ambitious EU Eastern Partnership policy and the European aspirations of partner countries. “We must keep the international community focused on Ukraine, support its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and assist in reforms”, said the President of Lithuania.
Speaking about relations with Belarus, President Nausėda said that Lithuania was prepared for a dialogue with Belarus, but it also depended on the progress of Belarus in terms of human rights and the implementation of nuclear safety requirements.
The EU agenda items such as negotiations on the multiannual financial framework, the EU Mobility Package and climate change were touched upon. It was agreed to maintain a common position on cohesion policy and funding of agriculture. The two leaders agreed to work on improving the draft EU Mobility Package under discussion in the European Parliament and the Council, and ensure that it was in line with the internal market and environmental principles.
Lithuanian President reminded the invitation to the Polish banks to expand in Lithuania and invited finance, biotechnology and innovation development companies to explore opportunities of the Baltic market.
On November 22, the Polish and Lithuanian Presidents accompanied by spouses will attend the state funeral of the leaders and participants of the 1863-1864 uprising. The President of Poland paid a visit to Lithuania at the invitation of President Gitanas Nausėda delivered during their first meeting in Warsaw, in July.
