“Sustainable economic growth and safety of Lithuanian and EU citizens are among the top issues on the EU agenda”, the President said.
The President noted that to achieve sustainable economic growth, we must pay particular attention to climate change, efficient functioning of the internal market, deepening of cohesion and development of innovations. When speaking about the safety of EU citizens, the President thanked the European Parliament for the additional funds for the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant and stressed that the Ostravets nuclear power plant was recognized as a nuclear threat for the whole of Europe, therefore, the safety of nuclear power plants constructed in the EU neighborhood must be addressed at the EU level.
“The energy security situation in Lithuania inevitably depends on one of the most important EU infrastructure development projects – the synchronization of power grid by 2025. The will of the EU leaders, the mobilization of all parties and the focus on the multiannual financial framework is needed to successfully achieve this goal”, said the President.
During the meeting, the mobility package that is relevant for the Lithuanian transport companies was also addressed. The President urged the new President of Parliament as well as the Members of the European Parliament to initiate a consideration of this issue to assess its compliance with EU single market principles, climate change aspirations and contribution to improving drivers’ working conditions.
Views on Brexit, EU global and migration policies, as well as citizen involvement in the EU decision-making were also exchanged.
