“Germany is Lithuania’s key defense, security and economic partner in Europe. It provides crucial support to our national security by leading NATO’s enhanced forward presence in Lithuania. The development of trade and economic relations, collaboration in financial services and innovation need to remain a priority and continue expanding,” the President said.
Energy security, problems relating to the Ostrovets nuclear power plant and EU neighborhood policy will also be addressed in Berlin.
After the official welcome ceremony at the Federal Chancellery, President Gitanas Nausėda and Chancellor Angela Merkel will have a one hour private conversation to discuss security and defense, strategic guidelines for bilateral communication and energy independence goals.
On Wednesday, the President and the First Lady will lay a wreath at the Berlin Wall Memorial and visit the memorial museum. Later, they will meet with members of Germany’s Lithuanian community at the Lithuanian Embassy in Berlin.
On August 15, President Gitanas Nausėda will meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to review the strengthening of transatlantic relations that are vital for ensuring proper defense capabilities. They will also discuss options for investing in defense. Special focus will be placed on the security situation, forthcoming NATO summit, Russia-related issues, and Eastern Neighborhood. First Lady Diana Nausėdienė will meet with the German President’s wife, Elke Büdenbender.
The President’s visit to Germany coincides with meaningful historical dates. This year marks the 30th anniversaries of the Baltic Way and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
