"I am grateful to the parliamentarians of the Republic of Poland, who took an active part in the events that have been organised in Vilnius. Also, I express my gratitude to the Polish politicians, who supported us during a very responsible period of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union," Speaker Graužinienė said.
In her turn, the Marshal of the Polish Sejm, stressed that the Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament was very good at working out compromises when it came to addressing complex and problematic matters.
During the meeting, both heads of Parliament talked about the Law on National Minorities, which is planned to be adopted in Lithuania. Loreta Graužinienė noted that the programme of the Spring Session of the Seimas envisaged deliberations of draft laws on education, writing of foreign names and legal regulation of the status of national minorities.
"The Government has set up a working group, consisting of representatives of all national minorities in Lithuania and researchers, to draft a Law on National Minorities. Hopefully, compromises will be made and the draft law will be completed shortly. It is important to adopt the law that would be acceptable for all national minorities. Tomorrow morning, I am going to have a meeting with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and discuss the progress made by the working group for the Law on National Minorities," Mrs Graužinienė said.
During the meeting, the Speaker and the Marshal acknowledged that Lithuania and Poland had to continue maintaining good mutual relations with a view to prosperity of the people of the two countries.
