“Today it is very important that Lithuania and the other Baltic countries keep to a firm unified stand on the synchronization of Baltic power grids with continental Europe. We seek a smooth and rapid implementation of the synchronization project set for completion before 2025,” the President said, adding that the European Commission’s support was critical for achieving this major geopolitical objective.
To maintain an active and effective engagement in the project, the President proposed to establish a special EU coordinator position for Baltic synchronization. President Gitanas Nausėda will discuss this issue with the new President of Latvia, Egils Levits, during his working visit to Riga on July 23.
At today’s meeting, the President underlined the importance of EU’s support for Lithuania’s stance towards the threats posed by the Ostrovets nuclear power plant. Special focus was also placed on options to introduce at the EU level equal conditions governing trade in electricity with third countries.
The last time Maroš Šefčovič visited Lithuania was in May of 2017.
