The meeting also focused on the assessment of the new phase of activities of the EU institutions. The President and the Polish Prime Minister agreed to support Ursula von der Leyen’s nomination for the position of the President of the European Commission.
“This is the beginning of a new cycle of activities of the EU institutions. In our view, it is the beginning of the new political phase. Lithuania and Poland support the direction that the European Union institutions are determined to take in choosing their leaders. These leaders will be actively involved in tackling relevant EU agenda issues. Their political will, we believe, will be directed towards the security and prosperity of our countries,” said the President.
Gitanas Nausėda and Mateusz Morawiecki agreed that it is necessary to rethink the strategic project portfolios assigned to national Commissioners and give it more weight and relevance in order to achieve the foreign policy goals of both countries. Negotiations on the EU multiannual financial framework were also discussed, with a view to a more rapid agreement on the new EU budget for 2021–2027.
The Brexit was also touched upon at the meeting. The President and the Prime Minister agreed to promote greater involvement of the United Kingdom in the European security and defense architecture: “We are unanimous on this issue – we believe that the United Kingdom, as a nuclear NATO state, should continue to work closely with EU members in the future. European citizens, Lithuanians and Poles living in the UK, should not suffer as a result of a protracted search for Brexit compromises,” said Gitanas Nausėda.
The President and the Prime Minister also addressed the European cohesion and key bilateral agricultural policy issues. The President emphasized to the Prime Minister the strategic European energy and transport infrastructure projects, which are directly linked to the economic future prospects of Lithuania and Poland. The security problem of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus was also discussed.
During his visit to Poland, Gitanas Nausėda met with President Andrzej Duda of Poland, representatives of the Sejm and the Senate, visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Lithuanian Embassy in Poland, and met with the Lithuanian community. An individual visit program was arranged for first lady Diana Nausėdienė – she and the wife of the Polish President Agata Kornhauser-Duda met with the athletes of the Special Olympics.
The President should go to Latvia for his next visit.
