‘In Septemeber we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the restoration of the diplomatic relations, and I am pleased to note that our countries can boast a particularly close dialogue and busy agenda. It is always a pleasure to meet and talk about the mutual achievements and future plans. Lithuania has always supported Sakartvelo’s democratic development and its efforts towards integration with the West. Lithuania remains firm and consistent in this regard’, said the Prime Minister.
Saulius Skvernelis has noted Lithuania’s expectations as regards enhanced practical cooperation in the fields of engineering, information technology and trade. It has also been pointed out that Sakartvelo’s Prime Minister Bakhtadze, on his visit to Lithuania, noted the achievements of Lithuanian start-ups. The start-ups growth has been five-fold in recent years; we now have 520 start-ups, and the total of attracted investments is EUR 183 million. If need be, Lithuania is ready to share its experience in this regard.
The interlocutors have also noted the need for direct flights, which would stimulate business and tourism. According to Saulius Skvernelis, it is very important to connect the capitals, Tbilisi and Vilnius.
Saulius Skvernelis has emphasised that Lithuania firmly supports Sakartvelo’s integration with the European Union and NATO, both politically and practically. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the EU’s Eastern Partnership programme. It is important that this programme does not become a technical assistance tool, and Sakartvelo maintains leadership both in words and in action.
Lithuania supports NATO’s open door policy and is ready to assist Sakartvelo in achieving these goals.
Cooperation between Lithuania and Sakartvelo in the field of defence and security must gain momentum. Lithuania has been a consistent supporter of Sakartvelo’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Last year, we started the 6th Twinning project helping to reform Sakartvelo’s civil service.
Speaker of Sakartvelo Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze (assumed the post on 18 November 2016) has come to Vilnius on a working visit, and he will also attend the Baltic Assembly Conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership.
