Judges Viktoras Kažys, Konstantinas Gurinas and Valdimaras Bavėjanas from the Court of Appeal, judge Egidijus Laužikas from the Supreme Court, judge Henrichas Jaglinskis from the Vilnius Regional Court, judge Arūnas Kaminskas from the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court, judge Gintaras Čekanauskas from the Regional Administrative Court (Kaunas Chamber), and judge Robertas Rainys from the District Court of Vilnius City are under investigation for corruption, including bribery, influence peddling and abuse of office.
Pre-trial investigation into large-scale corruption involving judicial institutions and lawyers has been launched by the Prosecutor General.
According to the Constitution, judges can be held criminally liable, detained or have their liberty restricted only with the consent of the Seimas or, in between parliamentary sessions, with the consent of the President of the Republic of Lithuania.
The President underlined that even though the courts of law have been significantly revitalized, old habits and their remnants continue to undermine public trust in justice, making the final cleanup necessary. Fighting corruption and introducing transparency into courts of law have been on top of the President’s list of priorities during her two terms in office.
