‘Latvia is our closest and most important neighbour, and we share close practical relations, language sources and the culture. I very much appreciate the live dialogue between the countries, and we are ready to continue our cooperation as regards better security as well as the common energy and transport projects. I think it is very important to maintain both the formal and informal forms of contacts, to continue the tradition of holding joint Latvian-Lithuanian governmental meetings’, said Saulius Skvernelis.
Both Prime Ministers have expressed concern about the Astravyets NPP project in the neighbourhood, particularly about the improper and casual selection of the construction site.
The Head of the Lithuanian Government has welcomed the political agreement on the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity grid with continental European networks and emphasised the importance of the Rail Baltica project, while pointing out that both states agree on strategic goals in the fields of energy, transport and security.
Saulius Skvernelis has underlined how important it is for the three Baltic States to speak with one voice in the EU, in particular when discussing the new financial perspective and ensuring adequate funding in key areas. The meeting agenda also included regional security developments and the related challenges, as well as the Brexit.
The Latvian Prime Minister has thanked for the decision on the reconstruction of the Rengė railway section. He has noted that the elimination of this long-standing problem shows that Lithuania and Latvia can find solutions to everything.
Saulius Skvernelis has taken the opportunity to invite the Latvian colleague to come to Lithuania on an official visit at his earliest convenience.
