The discussion has mainly focussed on security. The Prime Minister has emphasised that Israel is Lithuania’s strategic partner in the Middle East. The counterparts have welcomed the growing bilateral political co-operation, while expressing the need for taking it further. It has been noted that Lithuania could serve as Israel’s voice in the European Union presenting Israel’s position in more detail towards a greater dialogue between the European Union and Israel.
‘Lithuania is a friend of Israel and we need to help better understand Israel’s situation in the European Union. We will try to mediate between the European Union and Israel for a better understanding of Israel’s position’, said the Prime Minister.
The Head of Government has pointed out the need to raise relations between Lithuania and Israel to a higher level. Saulius Skvernelis has also emphasised the importance of Israel’s presence at the front lines in the fight against terrorism. According to the Prime Minister, this must be better understood and have an appropriate appreciation.
The Prime Minister has also visited the Yad Vashem memorial on Tuesday to pay tribute to the Holocaust victims. Here, Saulius Skvernelis has signed the memorial book, laid the wreath on behalf of the Lithuanian Government and planted a symbolic tree in the grove.
