EU leaders will discuss political agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. They are also expected to approve a political declaration on the future EU-UK relationship.
According to the President, the deal reached following tough negotiations meets the basic interests of Lithuania since it secures the existing status of Lithuanian citizens living the United Kingdom. It contains provisions that EU citizens arriving in the UK before the transitional period ends on 31 December 2020 will enjoy the same rights and guarantees as those who arrive before Brexit.
The agreement also envisages that EU law will continue to apply to the United Kingdom until the end of the transition and that the UK will continue to honor its financial obligations under the multiannual financial framework for 2017-2020.
The document outlines a solution to one of the most sensitive Brexit issues: how to ensure that there is no hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland in the event that no deal on the future relationship between the EU and UK is made before the end of the transition period. In this case, Northern Ireland should remain an integral part of the EU Customs Union and the Single Market.
The Political Declaration to be adopted by EU leaders this coming Sunday will set out the framework for the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom. It states that the EU and the UK will maintain close trading contacts and will remain committed partners in security and foreign policy matters. It establishes the basis for cooperation in the fields of energy and transport and guarantees visa free travels for EU and UK citizens.
