Grybauskaite will participate in the election as an independent candidate; however, two political parties have already expressed their support for her in the presidential election: the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party (TS-LKD) and the Liberals' Movement Party.
Grybauskaite will have to combine the commitments of a candidate and the president. The main law of the country does not provide any limitations to fulfilling duties of a candidate seeking for re-election. General requirements for the incumbent president do not differ from those for other candidates: to be registered as a candidate, the president needs to collect 20,000 of signatures.
However, the law provides that the president cannot use either his office or his staff for political campaign.
As reported, the list of candidates to the presidential election also includes MEP Zigmantas Balcytis, a candidate of the social democrats, MP Arturas Paulauskas, nominated by the Labour Party, Bronis Rope, a candidate of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, MP Linas Balsys, nominated by the Lithuanian Green Party, jobless Alfredas Aliukevicius and Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas.
