On June 18 new rotation of Lithuanian military personnel left for Afghanistan in C-27J Spartan aircraft of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to take part in the multinational NATO operation, Resolute Support Mission (RSM).
The deploying soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Military Police and other units will replace the current Lithuanian rotation serving in the operational headquarters in Kabul and the Train Advise Assist Command – West (TAAC – West).
The rotation that deployed Wednesday is mainly formed by the Military Police, it will serve as an international military police force alongside colleagues from Australia in the operational headquarters in Kabul.
The Lithuanian rotation which concludes its tour of duty is expected to return to Lithuania by the end of July.
Lithuania has been a part of the NATO Resolute Support Mission since 2015, currently, 50 Lithuania soldiers are serving in Kabul, Herat, and Kandahar.
Another 10 Lithuanian soldiers with the Deployable Communications and Information Systems Module of the NATO 3rd Signal Battalion are serving in Afghanistan under a separate mandate for the NATO Response Force (NRF).
Soldiers of the Alliance-led multinational force are training and assisting the Afghan National Security Forces and some of the ministries. Lithuanian soldiers do not take part in military actions.
