The Ministers discussed cooperation between the EU and CELAC, an opportunity for strengthening their political and economic ties, as well as relevant development cooperation topics. The heads of the EU and CELAC diplomatic services also discussed ways to tackle such global challenges as the climate change, illegal migration, drug trafficking, and corruption more effectively.
In the meeting, Linkevičius drew attention to the political and economic challenges facing South America. "There is no alternative to the respect of legitimate institutions, to the separation of powers and the respect for citizens' rights to freely express their political opinion," said the head of Lithuania's diplomatic service, who called on the world states to join efforts to address more actively the challenges facing Latin America.
The first Inter-Summit meeting was held in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, in 2016.
