Data protection
On Tuesday MEPs and their national counterparts will discuss upcoming changes to data protection laws, which will come into force on 25 May to ensure the security of EU consumers when providing personal information online.
Cyber security
As national security is increasingly at risk from virtual attacks and online information theft, the foreign affairs committee will vote on an own-initiative report with proposals to improve the cybersecurity of the EU’s armed forces on Wednesday. This includes creating closer cooperation between EU countries and making more money and staff available to identify the sources of cyberattacks.
Blockchain
On Wednesday the research committee will vote on an own-initiative report with plans concerning blockchain, which is a digital ledger containing information that can be used and shared simultaneously. After the dramatic upturn in the value of blockchain-based virtual currencies in the last year, safe standards need to be developed to improve security across the industry.
Civil protection
On Thursday, the environment committee will vote on proposals to improve the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which provides support to EU countries in the wake of natural disasters. Members will discuss how to make it easier to respond to these crises.
Migration
On Wednesday MEPs will also review funding for the EU’s migration programmes, looking at ways to make spending in this area more efficient.
