According to the President, this is a political victory of Lithuania and achievement of all countries of the region. It will finally ensure energy independence, lower prices and enhance national security.
The breakthrough on synchronization of the Baltic power grids with continental Europe was achieved at the meeting between Dalia Grybauskaitė and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, in Tallinn, in autumn of 2017. The European Commission strongly supported the synchronization via Poland and stressed the importance of the project for the security of the entire EU.
Today, the leaders endorsed the agreement that will make the project eligible for funding already in the current financial framework. The European Commission regard the synchronization of Baltic power grids as an absolute priority in the list for funding from the Connecting Europe Facility.
In the joint statement, the leaders also underscored that the synchronization of the Baltic States' electricity network with the European continental system was the flagship project of the Energy Union and a concrete expression of solidarity in enhancing energy security of the entire EU. The leaders stressed that the year 2018 was crucial for the implementation of the project and came to an agreement to finalize political and technical work needed to prepare for disconnection from the electricity ring controlled by Russia as soon as possible.
