On the first day of his visit on 30 October, Tajani was welcomed by Mohammed Ennaceur, president of the Tunesian parliament and then had the opportunity to address the assembly.
Tajani cited Tunisia as an example for other countries, but urged them to be vigilant: “Let us be the guarantors of the democratic pact. We should strengthen it because the only alternative to democracy is chaos.”
The President of the European Parliament also called for a new partnership with Africa: “The Mediterranean should not be a separation, but a link between the European Union and the African continent, because the Mediterranean is the crucible of the values of our civilisation and Tunisia plays a fundamental role in this particular relationship.”
In the afternoon Tajani visited the Bardo Museum, where terrorist attacks took place in 2015. Today he is due to meet Béji Caid Essebsi, president of Tunisia; Youssef Chahed, head of the government; as well as representatives from civil society, business leaders and journalists.
