The meeting will focus on Lithuania's preparations for taking over the Presidency of the UN Security Council to which Lithuania has been for the first time elected as a non-permanent member this year. Among the other points of discussion will be important issues on the UN agenda, including cyber security and energy security, climate change, and gender equality.
According to the President, Lithuania's election to the United Nations Security Council is an important international recognition, historic challenge and great responsibility for our country. Of the 193 UN members, 187 voted in favor of Lithuania's membership in the Council that is the supreme decision-making body in the area of global security.
The United Nations Security Council has 15 members. Five countries - the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China - are permanent members. The other ten non-permanent members are elected for a two-year term. The headquarters of this organization is in New York City. The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
