According to the President, Europe regains confidence but it is not the time for complacence. European people expect changes and tangible decisions for preventing repeated crises and enhancing wellbeing and security of Europeans.
The future priority actions also include matters of high relevance for Lithuania: promotion of EU‘s economy, addressing social challenges and the start of negotiations on the multiannual EU budget. Twelve more EU leaders‘ summits are planned before the summer of 2019.
Early next year, the EU leaders will start preparation for the negotiations on the new multiannual EU budget. For Lithuania, it is especially important to ensure that it receives sufficient financial support from structural funds as well as support for agriculture, strategic projects, synchronization, safe decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant and other areas of national importance.
Already next month, the EU leaders will meet in Sweden to address poverty alleviation and social isolation matters on the European scale. In December, the heads of state or government will focus on the Eurozone with the aim to enhance Europe‘s resilience to global financial challenges. The leaders also plan to promote innovations, expand EU’s trade policy, enhance EU‘s security and the common market.
Migration challenges also demand leaders’ attention. Although the flow of arrivals went down during the recent years, it is necessary to find long-term solutions for migration flow not to reoccur.
