Before the middle of 2019, thirteen summits will be held in which the leaders will discuss ways to enhance the Eurozone’s resilience to financial crises, promote growth of EU economy, reduce social isolation, and find long-term solutions to migration challenges and other matters of importance to the future of the EU. Next year, the negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework will begin. In the negotiations, Lithuania will aim to ensure that it receives all the possible financial support – for coherence, agriculture, strategic energy projects and other areas.
The European Council will discuss ways to encourage European countries’ cooperation in the area of defense and ensure cyber security on the EU scale. Lithuania’s contribution is important as our cyber proposals become part of EU defense and security policy.
The leaders will also review the state of migration. Consistent efforts of the EU member states to address root causes of migration already produce results – the arrivals to Italy have gone down by 20 per cent this year.
The leaders of EU-27 will also discuss Brexit negotiations, which began four months ago, and their further course.
Geopolitical realia also demand attention of the leaders. The EU heads of state and government will discuss the prospects of EU relations with Turkey, support to Iran’s nuclear disarmament, and response to threats posed by North Korea.
