Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said that the European Commission’s decision on the imposition of a fine on Lithuanian Railways would be thoroughly looked at as this is a complicated issue that calls for a complex and deep legal and political analysis.
“We are for a constructive dialogue with the EC. Unfortunately, we have to admit that this problem has been inherited by our government as well as by the incumbent management of the Lithuanian Railways. We are not willing to make any hasty conclusions, and thus a decision on further action will be taken only after a thorough examination into all the circumstances”, emphasized the Head of the Government.
The Prime Minister noted the ongoing reform of the entire company carried out by the new administration of the Lithuanian Railways in line with EU legal requirements.
The interlocutors emphasised the importance of ensuring level playing field and fair competition across the EU, including as regards the evaluation of the activities of third country companies in the EU. According to the Prime Minister, the fair competition must be safeguarded, as it is particularly important for both business and citizens. It is expected that all the instances of the abuse of the monopoly will be thoroughly scrutinised in the Gazprom antimonopoly case.
