The OECD Ministerial Council this year has decided to invite Lithuania to open membership talks in 2015. In the run-up to accession negotiations, Lithuania has already developed an action plan to strengthen cooperation with OECD and closer integration in the organization. The action plan includes more intensive capturing of experience in governance, trade, development, education, investment promotion and other important spheres.
Presenting Lithuania's preparations for membership talks to the OECD Council is very important for our evaluation and progress in negotiations.
"Lithuania is preparing for the OECD accession process very responsibly and already adheres to the organization's underlying principles. Strengthening cooperation with OECD opens new opportunities to promote economic growth and competitiveness as well as apply the most effective governance and transparency schemes. It contributes to raising awareness of achievements, credibility and international standing of Lithuania," the President said.
Speaking about Lithuania's preparations for OECD membership, the President underlined that our commitment to OECD requirements is also proved by economic indices and recognition of the international community.
According to the President, Lithuania is a valued and reliable business and trade partner which already meets many OECD criteria. Last "Doing Business" report ranked Lithuania 17th in the world. Together with Scandinavian countries we are among the most favorable places for business in Europe.
At the OECD Council, the President also presented Lithuania's successful experience in dealing with economic crisis, highlighted achievements in promoting the development of innovative and digital technologies as well as in IT, laser and biotechnology sectors. These accomplishments, according to the President, demonstrate that we can be useful and reliable partners and make our own contribution to OECD activities.
OECD has about 250 specialized committees, working groups, forums and programmes where the most urgent issues relating to economy, trade, labor, education, health, financial markets as well as other matters are discussed. Lithuania already participates in 25 permanent OECD committees and programmes, has been associated with nine international instruments and applied for joining four more. By the end of this year we expect invitations to join 11 more committees and working groups and we will initiate accession to two additional international instruments.
