“The EU now faces serious challenges, but I believe that through our joint and focused efforts we will be able to strengthen Europe and boost our citizens’ confidence even more,” said Linkevičius.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister underlined the need to unanimously continue efforts to support reform processes in the Eastern Partnership countries.
“The synchronization of the Baltic states’ power grids with the continental network remains one of the most important priorities that cannot be postponed. Lithuania is ready to take on the role of a leader in this matter. Studies have shown that the most cost-effective and efficient way to synchronize the energy systems of the Baltic states with the EU leads through Poland,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy. He emphasized the importance of the Commission’s support in implementing this ambitious project.
Linkevičius also raised the issue of the Ostrovets NPP project in Belarus. He called on the EU to remain united and to insist on compliance with all international nuclear safety and environmental standards very clearly. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that Lithuania had established its position towards electricity generated in unsafe nuclear power plants by law.
The meeting also discussed issues related to the future of EU finances and identified Lithuania’s priorities for future negotiations.
