Ambassador R.Paulauskas congratulated Israel on participating constructively in its second Universal Periodic Review on 29 October and stressed the importance of universality of this UN mechanism as well as its benefits to the human rights records of all UN member states. Emphasis was also placed on the utmost value of the Universal Periodic Review - its goal to improve the human rights situation on the ground by implementing the respective recommendations.
Ambassador R.Paulauskas supported the goal of Israel, as of any other UN member state, to become a member of a regional group.
The Universal Periodic Review has been a human rights mechanism since 2008. It is recognized as one of the most successful tools of the UN Human Rights Council, which was established in 2006. This mechanism is designed to ensure equal treatment for every country when their human rights situations are assessed.
