According to the President, Europeans value concrete work not visions. The confidence of voters is earned when their needs and interests are taken into account. Therefore, it is important for the EU to design safe and secure future and to aim for it through responsible decisions and work.
Cooperation between the EU member states in the area of defense that is gaining the momentum has to lead to concrete actions for enhancing Europeans’ security. Cyber and information threats have to be countered through consolidated efforts rather than one-by-one. It is necessary to exchange intelligence information in a more effective manner and engage in closer cooperation with NATO. A better protection of the EU external borders is crucial not only in addressing migration challenges but also in ensuring security of the member states.
The heads of state or government also discussed economic situation of the EU. Economic growth, creation of new jobs and poverty reduction are important for Lithuanians and for all Europeans alike. Therefore, it is an obligation of the states to implement structural reforms in a consistent manner, target the European support for reducing social disparities and implement responsible fiscal policy.
Secure and reliable energy sources are necessary for secure future of the EU. Therefore, it is paramount to avoid delay in the implementation of energy links projects, promote fair competition in the European gas market and speak with external suppliers with one voice.
