Dalia Grybauskaitė invited the President of Poland to attend the celebration events of the Centennial of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania on February 16 next year. At the invitation of the President of Poland, Dalia Grybauskaitė will also attend celebration events that mark the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence next year.
According to the President, Lithuania and Poland are close neighbors, partners and NATO allies. We share the view on threats posed to us, aggressive actions of Russia and work together for ensuring safety and security of our people. In the face of geopolitical challenges, Lithuania and Poland may count on each other.
The Presidents discussed hostile to the West military exercise “Zapad” that took place on the border with Lithuania and Poland. Dalia Grybauskaitė underscored that the lessons of “Zapad” had to be learnt through further enhancement of NATO readiness to deter and counter threats. More rapid NATO’s decision-making, defense plans compatibility, specific measures for avoiding military isolation of the Baltic countries, enhancing regional air space security and the deployment of Alliance’s troops in Europe in line with contemporary threats – are the shared interests of Lithuania and Poland.
Dalia Grybauskaitė also underscored that Poland was strategically important in ensuring territorial and air defense of the Baltic states. U.S. squad deployed in Poland contribute to the protection of the “Suwalki corridor”. In case of a necessity, NATO allies’ reinforcement would come notably via the territory of Poland. To this end, it is paramount to ensure faster and easier movement of NATO member countries’ military equipment within the borders of the Alliance.
The Presidents also discussed bilateral energy cooperation. Lithuania and Poland share views on the importance of electricity networks synchronization with continental Europe. This is the last step in establishing regional energy independence that cannot be postponed.
At the meeting, Dalia Grybauskaitė also underscored that Lithuania valued high-principled position of Poland to refuse buying electricity produced by the unsafe Astravets nuclear power plant. Such regional solidarity is highly important for countering threats posed to the entire Europe by the unsafe nuclear power plant.
