The Presidents will discuss security situation in Europe and cooperation in NATO. Portugal clearly understands threats posed to our region and assists in countering them. Already the third company of Portuguese troops rotates in Tauragė. Portugal is also actively engaged in air policing mission in the Baltic states and has commissioned its soldiers to NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius.
EU energy security and response to hybrid threats will be discussed at the meeting. At the international Espoo Conference, Portugal strongly supported Lithuania’s position regarding the threat posed to the entire Europe by the unsafe NPP in Astravyets. Likewise Lithuania, Portugal operates an LNG terminal and was among the first to import liquefied natural gas from the U.S.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Portugal will also discuss the outstanding issues on the EU agenda: Brexit negotiations that have begun, response to migration crisis, and closer security and defense cooperation in the EU.
The Presidents will focus on the development of bilateral relations as well. In recent years, Portuguese investments in Lithuania rose by over a third. However, there is a huge cooperation potential in a number of areas, including food and chemistry industry and high technologies that the countries have not tapped into yet.
