"Energy projects now underway in the European Union are crucial to both Lithuania and Spain. Our aim is to have the internal energy market completed by 2014 as it will be beneficial for us - it will serve to boost competitiveness in this field and reduce energy prices for consumers," the President said.
Dalia Grybauskaitė and the Spanish Foreign Minister discussed preparations for the forthcoming Vilnius Summit. According to the President, the signing of an Association Agreement with Ukraine and the initialing of such agreements with Moldova and Georgia is important for the whole of EU - a safer neighborhood means greater security to the EU itself. Among the other topics discussed were the European Union-Latin America cooperation and the developments in the Mediterranean Sea region. The EU must continue supporting this region in tackling the refugee problem and seeking a more effective use of the European instruments that are in place.
The bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Spain was also reviewed. The trading volume soared by 26 percent in the first half of 2013, compared to the previous year. Lithuanian business expansion to Spain has become more intense. A Lithuanian tourism agency has opened its doors in Madrid this year.
Spain participates in the NATO air policing mission in the Baltic States. This country has supported Lithuania's membership in the United Nations Security Council.
