The Seimas adopted the decision in view of the Government assessment on the nuclear power plant (NPP) constructed in Astravyets, Belarus. The Government assessment acknowledges the Astravyets NPP to be unsafe under the criteria laid down in international conventions and recognises it as a threat to national security, environment, and public health in the Republic of Lithuania.
The Seimas has also invited the parliaments of the neighbouring countries to support international initiatives against the construction of unsafe nuclear power plants, including the Astravyets NPP, stressing that the lack of energy security is a key element in retaining the Baltic States and Europe as a whole in the Russian sphere of influence.
The document adopted by the Seimas calls on the Latvian, Estonian and Polish Parliaments to jointly address the EU institutions – the European Parliament and the European Commission – in order to develop a common EU policy in this field.
