“It is obvious that only through cooperation rather than competition we will be able to attract European funding and investments in the common regional gas market. Besides, the joining of the gas supply routes may bring down the infrastructure maintenance costs and, consequently, gas prices for the consumer”, said Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.
According to the Prime Minister, the discussions have focussed not only on the cooperation in the fields of gas supply and storage, but also on the projects that are most economically viable and beneficial for all the parties.
Prime Minister of Latvia Māris Kučinskis and Prime Minister of Estonia Jüri Ratas have been shown the operations of the Klaipėda LNG terminal and had discussions on potential benefits of the acquisition of the FSRU Independence with EU co-funding.
“I would like to point out that the LNG terminal in Lithuania, the underground gas storage in Latvia and the new mid-scale LNG import terminal in Estonia are the cornerstones in achieving the required level of security and diversity of gas supply in the Baltic countries”, said Head of Government Saulius Skvernelis.
The three counterparts have agreed to continue the close cooperation towards the most economically viable solutions for the Baltic region in ensuring a competitive and reliable gas supply.
