"Today, thanks to NATO and our other allies, we are as safe as never before. The allied forces have significantly contributed in reinforcing our defense. On the other hand, we also do our best to ensure our own safety, therefore the national defence and increased spending in this field is a priority of our government”, said the Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.
The Prime Minister noted Lithuania’s consistent efforts to reach 2 per cent defence spending by 2018. There will be further efforts to increase the spending beyond the 2 per cent target. NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg welcomed Lithuania’s commitment in this regard, noting that our country can be a great example for other countries.
Lithuania’s defense budget has doubled against 2013. More than a quarter (28 per cent) of defence spending is allocated for upgrading armament, acquisitions and investments. There is no disagreement in this regard between the politicians and the public.
Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis thanked for the efforts to adopt and implement a historic decision regarding the Enhanced Forward Presence in the region. The Prime Minister assured that the Government would do its best to prepare Lithuania to properly respond to military threats, and take good care of NATO allies in Lithuania.
Further cooperation development with NATO and the allies was also among the items of the meeting agenda. The Prime Minister noted that Lithuania is and will remain a reliable ally. The country has participated and will participate in international operations and missions as well as the fight against terrorism.
