Currently, Lithuania stresses that it is important to ensure proper conditions for the UN experts in Syria to carry on with their mission, conduct an impartial investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons, and provide a conclusion. Lithuania regrets that the UN experts were not allowed to go to the incident scene immediately after the attack on 21 August.
The use of weapons of mass destruction is a crime against humanity, and is therefore an act that demands condemnation and an appropriate response by the international community.
In case chemical weapons were used the international community cannot stand aside. The United Nations Security Council has primary responsibility for this, so we call on the Security Council to step up its efforts to find a credible solution to the Syria crisis.
It is important to note that a political solution is the only viable way to secure long term peace and stability in Syria.
