Members of the European Parliament, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, Petras Auštrevičius and Valentinas Mazuronis, who were present at the meeting, thanked the organisers and shared their ideas on how to strengthen and develop the cooperation between the Seimas Committee on European Affairs and MEPs. Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, MEP, focused on social issues on the EU agenda. She spoke about the European Pillar of Social Rights initiative and the proposal to revise the Posting of Workers Directive, which, in her view, divided Europe at the time when its unity was of critical importance. Petras Auštrevičius, MEP, expressed his concern about the prospects of the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine and invited the members of the Committee and the Government to formulate the position of the Republic of Lithuania on EU enlargement process, the European Security and Defence Union, and the negotiations on the UK’s exit from the EU.
The Members of the European Parliament invited their colleagues to step up the efforts in finding common solutions to the EU issues and expressed the opinion that close cooperation between the Members of the European Parliament from Lithuania, the Seimas and the Government, was essential, with a view to ensuring the best representation of the common position of Lithuania in the European Union.
At the end of the meeting, Gediminas Kirkilas, Chair of the Committee, suggested to the Committee on the European Affairs and Members of the Lithuanian MEPs, arranging a conference on the future of the EU to be held in March 2017, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of signing the Treaty of Rome.
