“Since 2006, Montenegro has been NATO’s partner-state and has participated in the NATO Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) and Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme. Montenegro has participated in the Membership Action Plan since 2009. On 2 December 2015, the North Atlantic Council invited Montenegro to open negotiations for accession to the North Atlantic Treaty. The negotiations began in February 2016,” the explanatory note to the document says.
As the 29th member country of NATO, Montenegro is expected to contribute to ensuring stability and security in the North Balkans and strengthening the role of NATO in the face of modern threats.
The Protocol will enter into force after its ratification by all the parties to the North Atlantic Treaty in accordance with their national procedures.
