The President and the newly appointed Ambassador discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Sweden, cooperation in international organizations, economic relations and regional security issues.
According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, Sweden is a reliable partner, contributing to safe and advanced Baltic Sea Region. Sweden is an important partner of Lithuania in the areas of defense, energy and economics that promotes the development of business responsibility, innovation, science and technologies.
Sweden is the top foreign investor in Lithuania and an excellent trade partner. Last year, trade turnover increased by over 12%. Lithuania exports furniture and biodiesel to Sweden and imports fish, tractors and transformers. Lithuanian businesses establish themselves in Sweden and provide IT, transport and construction services.
Ambassador Rimkūnas has a Ph. D. in social sciences and worked as professor at Vilnius University. In 1990, he embarked on his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as Ambassador to Portugal, Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva. He also worked as undersecretary, vice minister and state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His most recent position was Vice Minister of Finance. The Ambassador speaks English and Russian.
