According to the Speaker of the Seimas, as Russia is continuing its aggressive policy and Belarus is constructing a potentially unsafe nuclear power plant in Astravyets, security situation in the region is a major cause of concern.
“Joint reaction of the Baltic States to shared problems and threats is crucial,” said the Speaker of the Seimas and underlined that it was important to exploit the potential for generating economic growth and prosperity in the region.
“Proper focus on the Rail Baltica project, intensive cooperation towards a single gas market and the synchronisation of the power systems with the continental European power grid are the areas where intensive dialogue and collaboration is needed,” Mrs Graužinienė was convinced.
The Speaker of the Seimas also noticed that EU’s political involvement with Eastern Partnership countries, despite public statements, de facto tended to decrease; therefore, it was essential to demonstrate international solidity and reliability of the European Union, as well as the importance of the Eastern Partnership policy for the EU.
The Speaker of the Seimas congratulated the Baltic Assembly on its important 25th anniversary, encouraged everyone to appreciate its accomplishments, and extended her wishes for many more significant achievements in the future. “I invite you to individually and jointly seek new ways, new solutions, and new opportunities to enhance the cooperation among the Baltic States. Without the Baltic Assembly, Baltic cooperation would be hardly imaginable,” Mrs Graužinienė said.
The 35th Session of the Baltic Assembly and the 22nd Baltic Council, organised in Riga (Republic of Latvia), discussed and adopted the documents on migration, managements of external borders of the European Union, demographic situation and family support, joint actions in developing Baltic regional transport infrastructure, and other matters.
