Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister stressed that Sweden was an important and reliable partner of Lithuania and expressed gladness at the dynamic and friendly bilateral relations. The countries have cooperated especially closely in the economic, energy security, regional security, defence and other fields. For many years, Sweden has been the biggest investor in Lithuania. At the beginning of 2016, the two countries were connected by the strategically important Nordbalt link. We think alike and strive for solidarity, addressing many challenges facing our region, as well as serious issues for the international community.
The Ambassador thanked Lithuania for its support to Sweden as a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council during the period 2017-2018. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister expressed Lithuania’s goal to work closely with Sweden within this important international organization, addressing issues, which were important for our region and the international community. Germanas also offered Sweden to make benfit from Lithuania’s experience as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council gained in 2014-2015.
During the meeting, the interlocutors also discussed the most important items on the EU agenda, including the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU, the challenges that international migration posed, relations with Russia, as well as the situation in Ukraine.
After holding the meetings at the Foreign Ministry, the Ambassador presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
This year, Lithuania and Sweden mark the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. Sweden was the first foreign country to open its Embassy in Vilnius after the restoration of Lithuania’s independence.
