Gediminas Kirkilas, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs, underlined the necessity of strengthening the role of national Parliaments and the need of an enhanced parliamentary dialogue with the European Commission on issues of strategic importance to national Parliaments. He also underlined the need to develop regional infrastructure projects of strategic importance and took note of the threat to regional security posed by the construction of the Astravyets NPP in Lithuania’s neighbourhood.
The meeting ended with an informal discussion on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), with the participation of Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade. The participants adopted a joint statement of chairs of the Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and Polish Parliamentary Committees on EU Affairs on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP), which expressed their support for this Agreement and stressed its geopolitical importance and the need to ensure transparency of the negotiations.
