Thursday, July 18, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the Prime Minister of Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili, to discuss EU relations with Georgia, the EU's Eastern Partnership and preparation for the Vilnius Summit to be held this autumn.

"We hope that the Vilnius Summit will produce results. The European Union and Georgia share the aspiration to successfully complete negotiations for an association agreement. However, it is very important that Georgia continues to effect internal reforms, implements the fundamental principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law," the President underlined.

The President said there were high expectations that the association agreement between the EU and Georgia would be initialed at the Vilnius Summit. But to this end, Georgia had to guarantee a transparent and non-biased judicial process and to ensure constructive cooperation with the opposition based on democratic principles.

The President pointed out that it was also very important to ensure free and fair presidential elections scheduled for this coming October in Georgia.

Dalia Grybauskaitė said that Lithuania and the European Union were ready to help Georgia carry through the reform process, but actual progress depended only on Georgia's political will to proceed on the path of democratic change.
