According to the President, Estonia is one of the most important partners of Lithuania. Bilateral relations, cooperation in international organizations, economic and business relations, and issues of energy and regional security were discussed at the meeting.
The President stressed the necessity to continue strengthening cooperation in the areas of security and defense and to implement projects of strategic importance for the region’s economic development. The important issue of synchronization of the Baltic electricity grids with continental Europe was also discussed at the meeting.
The President and the newly appointed ambassador discussed the safety of the Astravyets nuclear power plant – a matter of serious concern for all Baltic countries. The President underscored that the Baltic states must demand that the Belarusian authorities ensure the transparency of the construction in Astravyets and allow immediate access to international experts.
Economic relations between Lithuania and Estonia are becoming stronger. In 2015, Estonia was Lithuania’s sixth trading partner with a 13 percent turnover increase.
The President underlined that Lithuania was prepared to share its experience as Estonia takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2017.
The Ambassador, born in 1971, graduated from Tallinn University of Technology. She was Deputy Chief of Mission of the Estonian Embassy in Stockholm and foreign policy advisor to the President of Estonia. Jana Vanaveski speaks English, Russian, Swedish, and French.
