During a conversation after the ceremony, the President of Latvia and the Ambassador of Lithuania Žurauskas hailed the intensive and active political dialogue between Lithuania and Latvia, the strengthening of economic, business and cultural ties, and expressed willingness to make every effort to continue to actively strengthen and develop the partnership between Lithuania and Latvia, as well as people-to-people contact based on mutual respect and support. The officials also expressed their gladness that the countries celebrated the Day of the Baltic Unity together each year. The celebration of the Day of the Baltic Unity is popular, contributes to the strengthening of a sense of fraternity between the Baltic nations and promotes mutual understanding. Liepāja will host the events of the Day of the Baltic Unity on 24 September of this year.
The President Vējonis and Žurauskas exchanged opinions on important issues concerning the security of the region and other issues on the international agenda. “In today’s complex geopolitical situation, the unity of Lithuania and Latvia is more important now than ever before for increasing the safety and security of our people and of the countries in our region. While actively collaborating in the Baltic Sea region, the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and taking care of our region and of the European security, we must make every effort to respond to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as to seek guarantees regarding the safety, security and transparency of the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” said the Ambassador of Lithuania.
In 2015, Latvia was Lithuania’s 4th largest foreign trading partner, while Lithuania was the largest foreign trading partner of Latvia.
