The adopted amendments also abolished the three-month-long basic military training, which had been established as an alternative to initial mandatory military service.
At its sitting, the Seimas adopted amendments to the Law on the Basics of National Security and the Law on the Organisation of the National Defence System and Military Service aimed at creating the legal framework for a mixed model of manning the armed forces. Thus the army units will be composed of professionals and conscripts alongside.
The amendments will come into effect as of 1 September 2016.
