In the meeting, Angel Gurría, who was re-elected for a new five-year term as Secretary-General of the OECD, presented his Strategic Orientations for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Minister Linkevičius pointed out that the OECD strategic objectives were important and significant for Lithuania.
“Lithuania and the OECD’s priorities are very similar – the sustainable economic growth, youth policy, digital economy and innovation. We give a lot of attention to the fight against tax evasion and corruption, because it has a positive impact on the business environment both at the national and global levels,” said Linkevičius.
The meeting announced the launch of an OECD Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Programme.
The central theme of the OECD’s Ministerial Council Meeting this year is enhancing productivity for inclusive growth. The Lithuanian delegation took part in high-level discussions on education, employment, innovation, entrepreneurship, digital economy and environmental issues.
In the meeting, Latvian Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis will sign an Accession Agreement, which will then be opened for ratification by the Saeima. Latvia will officially become the 35th member of the OECD on the date it deposits its instrument of accession to the OECD Convention.
“We congratulate Latvia on reaching this important goal and concluding the process of accession to the OECD. We greatly appreciate the work done by the team of accession of Latvia to the OECD and assistance for Lithuania’s accession process. We look forward to joining our neighbour and to continuing to work with Latvia as a full-fledged member of the OECD,” said Linkevičius.
The OECD’s Ministerial Council Meeting is held annually to address strategic issues related to the Organization’s activities and enlargement.
