The resolution of the Seimas (draft No XIIP-4113(2)), adopted by 71 votes in favour, no votes against and one abstention, highlights the fact that the Reformation produced a large number of prominent personalities in Lithuania who cherished and promoted the love for the native language, were active in the field of writing and culture, and shaped the education system. They include Martynas Mažvydas, Kristijonas Donelaitis, Jonas Bretkūnas and Abraomas Kulvietis. In addition, the Reformation prompted new social, economic, political and cultural processes in Europe, which also had a profound impact on Lithuania.
As emphasised in the document, the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Commission on Unity, established in Vatican, drafted a document From Conflict to Communion, intended to commemorate the anniversary of the Reform as a joint declaration of faith and joint search for unity.
The resolution that commemorates the event that was important to Lithuania’s cultural and spiritual life is aimed at reaching closer communion with all Christian churches and the public.
The resolution proposes to the Government to establish a commission for the commemoration of the Reformation, which would draw up, by 1 September 2016, a plan of measures for the commemoration of the Year of the Reformation. The document also urges to foresee the funding for the implementation of the plan in the state budget for 2017.
