The Foreign Minister acquainted the guest with Lithuania’s preparations to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The meeting discussed how to improve the cooperation between the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, the exchange of information for the provision of humanitarian assistance, particularly in the face of difficult crises, such as in Syria and Mali. The officials highlighted the need to strengthen the ability of these countries to respond to crisis; the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council will also dedicate a lot of attention to this important topic.
Humanitarian aid is an important part of the European Union’s external policies, designed to help people affected by armed conflicts, natural disasters, and suffering of hunger all around the world. The EU and its member states is the world’s largest international humanitarian aid donor. The EU accounts for half of all global aid.
To ensure an efficient provision of effective humanitarian aid, it should adhere to the basic values of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and non-discrimination.
