How do you get young people engaged with politics when many of them have become disillusioned due to youth unemployment reaching record highs across Europe? The League of Young Voters wants to make a difference by making more information about the EP elections available to them and ensuring that political parties and candidates focus on the issues that matter to young people. The initiative was launched on 30 May as a part of European Youth Week this week.

The League of Young Voters, which aims to increase the turnout of young people at European elections, was launched by Council president Herman Van Rompuy and Commission president José Manuel Barroso at YO!Fest, a two-day event outside the EP building in Brussels. The event on 30 and 31 May offers young people activities such as workshops and debates.

YO!Fest is organised by the European Youth Forum every year and this year it is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the European Youth programmes. On 31 May EP president Martin Schulz and commissioner Androulla Vassiliou were due to discuss the programmes' achievements and future with the public.
