The European Union has set the goal of completing the internal energy market by 2014 and eliminating its energy islands by 2015. This is of key importance for Lithuania to achieve energy self-dependence. A strong EU internal energy market will contribute to stronger competitiveness, faster economic growth and more jobs.
A better coordinated EU energy policy and a common approach to energy issues would ensure secure and uninterrupted energy supplies at affordable, competitive prices.
The European Council will also focus on the renovation and modernization of energy infrastructure as well as on ways to attract larger investments. At present a list of priority energy infrastructure projects is coordinated, which will be made public during Lithuanian presidency.
Another item on the European Council meeting's agenda will be tax policy, with a particular focus on how to improve tax collection and best tackle tax evasion.
