Linkevičius noted that Lithuania and the United Kingdom enjoyed strong economic and political ties, the two countries were close partners within the EU and reliable NATO allies.
The Ministers welcomed bilateral cooperation, which has substantially intensified in recent years in the fields of security and defence – cooperation projects are planned for several years ahead. The sides are jointly implementing the assurance measures agreed upon at NATO's Wales Summit.
"We hope that the participants of NATO's Summit in Warsaw will announce about the full implementation of the NATO Readiness Action Plan and further adaptation measures aimed to strengthen the Alliance's collective defence and deterrence. NATO has to demonstrate determination and unity, and show its vitality in the context of the current threats," said Linkevičius.
As regards the possible EU reforms, Linkevičius noted that Lithuania was willing to look for solutions to strengthen the EU. "We support proposals to promote the EU's competitiveness and to reduce the burden of business regulation. We also understand that the UK has a right to choose the depth of integration with the EU. However, the proposed reforms cannot discriminate against the citizens of the EU and violate the fundamental EU principle – the freedom of movement of persons", said Lithuania's Foreign Minister. According to him, Lithuania is ready to hear the UK's proposals and look for a mutually agreeable solution, which would be optimal.
As regards the situation in Ukraine and the policy with regard to Russia, Lithuania's Foreign Minister stressed that we had to be ready to provide all possible assistance to Ukraine. "In relations with Russia we have to pursue a consistent policy. The sanctions are effective, the EU countries must remain unified in making decisions on their behalf about the application of sanctions," said the Minister.
The Ministers also discussed the cooperation between the officials of Lithuania and the United Kingdom in the field of strategic communications.
