Today Lithuania celebrates 9th anniversary of membership in the European Union

On May 1 Lithuania celebrates its 9th anniversary as a member of the European Union. Within less than two months Lithuania will for the first time in its history host the six month-Presidency of one of the three EU's main decision making institutions – the Council of the European Union.

On this occasion the president of Lithuanian Republic Dalia Grybauskaitė wished all the best to the citizens of Lithuania, not only encouraging to use all the possibilities given by EU membership, but also urging them to actively contribute to the future of a united Europe.

“I give my best wishes to all citizens of Lithuania on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of our membership in the European Union. This year is special for us - soon we will start the Presidency of the EU Council. For the first time Lithuania will hold the responsibility of uniting all member states and finding the best solutions. Lithuania is a reliable member of the EU, which can contribute to building a stable, secure and open Europe. Most Lithuanians consider themselves as true Europeans and accepts the responsibility for the future not only of Lithuania, but also in Europe” – said the president of Lithuanian Republic Dalia Grybauskaitė.

Lithuania joined the European family on May 1, 2004, together with: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Hungary.
