The amendments repealed the requirement for persons who acquired citizenship of Lithuania and that of another state by birth to choose one citizenship or another at the age of 21.
Until now, the law stipulated that, if a person acquired, by birth, citizenship of another state, he had to decide, at the age of 21, which country's citizen he wanted to be.
The Constitution provides that citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania is acquired by birth and other grounds established by law. With the exception of individual cases provided for by law, no one may be a citizen of both the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time. The Law on Citizenship in force sets out nine cases, when a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania may be a citizen of another state at the same time.
